What is a 'smart city'?

A smart city is a city that has a culture of innovation, embraces an entrepreneurial approach and embeds technology into people-based solutions. As more cities across Australia adopt smart city schemes, their success depends on the capacity of their leaders to set a vision that is appropriate for their community.

Through greater understanding and integration of technology, innovation, and data, cities across the country are delivering more effective solutions for their communities. How to leverage the concepts, tools and opportunities to plan, finance, and deliver a coherent smart city strategy will be integral to the future of cities.

What will the Exchange entail?

The Exchange is a professional development opportunity that will provide delegates with confidence, connections and a catalogue of examples and experiences to draw on when planning and delivering smart city strategies. The Cities Leadership Institute has been leading successful International Exchanges since its conception, and due to the success and positive feedback from these exchanges, we have designed an opportunity to learn from our own cities that are leading the way on key urban issues in Australia.

The Domestic Exchange around Australia is a fully immersive four-day experience that builds the capacity of public and private sector leaders to create liveable and sustainable cities and communities. It provides delegates with unique access to experts and advisors in leading Australian smart cities; opportunities to develop and test smart city ideas, and in-depth knowledge and connections to accelerate the growth of smart cities.
