Cities Leadership Institute is pleased to announce International Guest, Kip Harkness, who will be joining us in Australia from the 23rd – 27th of July, 2018.
Kip’s journey has been diverse to say the least, taking him from Timbuktu to Silicon Valley; advising both farmers on the edge of the Sahara as well as technology leaders on the strategies needed to achieve inclusive and smart cities.
Currently, Kip is the Deputy City Manager for the City of San Jose, California, USA where he is responsible for executing smart and sustainable city strategies and emergency preparedness. As Deputy City Manager, Kip strives to gather a tribe of Civic Innovators to transform the City of San Jose into its best.
Previously, Kip served as the Director of Technology Engagement at PayPal, where he led the effort of creating the next generation of technology leaders for PayPal.
We met Kip last year in San Jose during our International Exchange on Smart Cities, where he engaged with our delegates, speaking to his experience working with technology and innovation in both the public and private sector.
San Jose is an interesting case study when looking at smart cities because of the diversity that lies within. It is an economic, cultural, and political center of Silicon Valley, serving as a major technology hub for the Bay Area, yet it also has one of the highest levels of income inequality in the
US. The area’s highest earners make 10.5 times more that its lowest earners, and that gap continues to widen.
Cities Leadership Institute will also be coordinating a masterclass led by Kip on Tuesday 24 July 2018.
