Member Profile: Waverley Council

Running along Sydney's coastline from Diamond Bay in the north, through Bondi, down to Clovelly and east to Centennial Park, Waverley is one of the oldest Councils in Australia. It is also one of the most densely populated, with around 71,700 residents working, living and playing in an area of just 9 square kilometres.

These are just some of the unique circumstances shaping the Waverley Council area now and into the future.

Being home to Bondi Beach also makes Waverley Council one of the most visited places in Australia, averaging 2.7 million tourists each year.

Just over 38 % of Waverley Council residents were born overseas and 20.9% of people speak a language other than English at home, making the area a true melting pot of the old and the new. With the local population forecast to reach about 82,000 by 2020, and 30% of current rate payers identifying as home based businesses, Waverley faces challenges on a scale encountered by very few other councils in Australia. Planning for the future of an iconic, heavily populated area of diverse communities is a task Council has worked strategically to prepare to meet. As well as Waverley Futures, headed up by Peter Monks, which holds responsibility for shaping, building and sustaining Waverley, in the last 12 months Council also participated in Smart Cities forums on community engagement and tapped into international expertise on creating innovation districts.

Following extensive community consultation, Council set Waverley's course firmly to the future with the adoption of the Waverley Community Strategic Plan 2018-2029 in June this year. Cities Leadership Institute is proud to be of assistance to Council in addressing Waverley's unique challenges to build a brighter future.
